Can we talk about how dumb it is that there can only be one lead actor, but their can be a lead actor and a lead actress. Why can't there be two lead actors and no lead actress, and vice versa.

I need help finding an animation festival
Best details I can give:
Title: Animation festival volume 2: a midsummer nights dream
Skits (sketches, whatever) included are:
Sigmund
Sky whales (I can find this skit)
The man, the dog, and the devil.
The jump
Its amazing, its astounding, but its no bullshit.
Your face is like a song (I can find this skit)
I want to find both films but the second one has the subtitle to help, the skits listed may be in one or the other.
Charades is the final skit on one of the films.
Unimportant back story: they are from my childhood and they would probably be some of the best videos to watch high.

Reddit, what are some of the most underrated films not typically talked about in /r/movies?
One that immediately comes to mind for me is the dark comedy Cecil B. Demented, directed by John Waters. It was 2000 film with limited release, following a group of domestic "terrorists" who kidnap a prissy actress to star in their little film. Throughout the film the group of terrorists vow to go "Celibate for Celluloid". They run around with the victim and force her to act out the scenes of the mastermind Cecil. In the process they find themselves in a lot of funny trouble as people chase them. I definitely recommend this film. It stars Melanie Griffith, Stephen Dorff, Alicia Wiitt, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. I give it two thumbs up. Completely original.
And no, the trailer does not do this film justice.
Here is the IMDB article.

Run All Night -- similar to Walk among the Tombstones?
Hey guys, recently checked out A Walk Among the Tombstones (65% on RT) and found it to be much more enjoyable than I was expecting. A few people I know have said that Walk Among is similar to Run All Night (haven't seen it yet) in terms of atmosphere. Wanted to know your thoughts on if the tone or story was similar to Walk Among and if you thought it was a good movie.

Hey guys. So I just saw November Man on Netflix and with watching John Wick last year. I love movies where a guy comes back and all hell breaks loose. I was wondering if you guys have some great ones I can watch.

I want to write a screenplay. Where do I get started?
I'm currently reading Story by Robert McKee, The Filmmaker's Handbook, am obviously practicing actually writing, and am saving up for a good piece of software (recommendations?). What other advice do you guys have for me?
I've no formal education in filmmaking, and am mostly doing this for my own enjoyment (my prose sucks so I'm avoiding novel-writing). I'm under no delusion that it'll get picked up, though I'll at least try to do so. I've heard it's good practice to go through a screenplay while watching the movie, but I've no idea where to get a hold of those, or which movies would be the most beneficial.
Any other tips from those that have attended film school?
Apologies if this is the wrong sub to post this.

This always baffled me. As a film buff, CGI is something that has helped films become bigger and FAR more epic. But not only that, it has incredible practical purposes that create a nicer image for the movie.

Struggling to remember the name this movie
First off, I apologise if this is the wrong subreddit. Please PM me directions on where to ask before you remove this.
Then my actual question. I saw a movie a few years ago that, as far as I can remember, was kinda funny.
It starts off with cracked glass and the publisher's name. Then a guy talking on the phone. His father had a wildlife show and he took it over. F-ed it up. They wanted to find Bigfoot or something. Shot him with a machine gun when they eventually found him in a cave. They travelled in an RV. A turkey swallowed one guy's penis and when the nurse massaged the neck to get it to relax, he got an erection. They also stole a bottle of narcotics from a dentist or something and spaced out.
That's all I remember. Does anyone here know what movie that is? Please help?

I'm a big fan of movies with existential themes. Some examples of movies I really enjoyed are The Fountain, Cloud Atlas, Mr. Nobody, and Magnolia (just off the top of my head). I guess I kinda like epic existential movies with a sci-fi twist, but perhaps that's too narrow. What are some of your favorites?

Would Titanic (1997) have been much better without the framing device?
I think Titanic has a lot of good qualities. Sure it's silly at times, but DiCaprio and Winslet are good, and once the ship starts sinking the film becomes so atmospheric. It really feels like being doomed at sea with the characters.
But I have only seen the film 3 times. And every now and then I think I might want to see it again, then I remember the utterly awful framing device. I hate every second of it. It adds nothing. It's just terrible. Old Rose is not interesting, and adds nothing to the scenes with Winslet-Rose. That nerd guy is just terrible. I know Cameron was mainly interested in the project so he could fund an expedition to the wreck. So is the framing device just there to justify having to film the wreck? Because Cameron must have seen how bad it was.
I understand the part of showing that she loved Jack for the rest of her life. That she throws “her” heart back in the sea at the end. And then sees him in the afterlife. I hated it. It's hammering the audience over the head with the story.
So do people disagree with me? Was it needed? Do you think it made the film better for viewers? I know without it the movie might seem less “romantic” because we would never know if she just regarded Jack as an infatuation later in life or her “soulmate”.

Why Isn't JJ Doing A Viral Marketing Campaign for Star Wars?
As a marketing professional, I really appreciate it when movies, video games, television shows, and albums put time and energy into viral marketing campaigns. 3 of the best viral campaigns I've ever come across - both in terms of complexity and payoff - belong to JJ Abrams. The movie Super 8 was, by far, the most impressive campaign. Aside from having to visit a variety of websites on specific dates and at specific times, he had mail-in portions where followers could subscribe to a fictional ice cream fan club and receive clues in return. I saw the movie 3 times in theaters after the campaign concluded, each time searching the screen for more Easter eggs. Cloverfield was similarly entertaining. The "Slusho" campaign was amazing and fun and the payoff of having a character wear a Slusho t-shirt in the film was a great wink to those of us who took the time to see the campaign through. "S" - the book conceptualized by JJ Abrams - was yet another glowing example of how a viral campaign can pay dividends. Not only were the "Stranger" videos a fun way to tease the story of "S," but the elements of the videos that weren't covered in the book led to speculation among fans regarding what may have been "missed" in by the two margin-writers of the book. If you didn't read the book, you only need to go to a discussion forum to see how those two short youtube clips have played into extended enjoyment of the book for thousands of people.
With all this in mind, I'm forced to ask - why hasn't JJ launched a viral campaign for Star Wars? If there is one group of fans who would appreciate a detail-oriented, complex, and debate-worthy marketing campaign in the lead-up to a movie - it has to be Star Wars fans. Am I the only person who wished this would happen? Can someone provide a reason why this strategy wasn't utilized for Star Trek or Star Wars (both Abrams films)?

Questions about IMAX, Liemax, and DMR..
I recently learned about Liemax. I had gone to see TDKR back in IMAX when it came out, and it was a better experience than my regular theater, but it was unimpressive, especially for the amount of money we paid (there were 9 of us). It was surprising in a disappointing sort of way, bunch of people rave about IMAX, I was hoping for a mind-blowing experience, in terms of theater experience. I was always puzzled as to why. I recently stumbled across Liemax, and I have to say, it makes a lot more sense now. Liemax is kind of a dick move by the IMAX Corp., IMO. Anyway, I really want to see a non-Liemax movie now. I'm a big superhero nerd, and have been debating taking a trip to Navy Pier to see Age of Ultron. I am aware it was not shot on 70mm film and is being DMR'd. My question is... will DMR at a real IMAX theater be better than my TDKR Liemax experience, or will it end up being the same thing? I'm not really informed on how that type of stuff works. I know films shot natively on 70mm are best, but will Ultron be fun and worth the money?

Some Thoughts On The Upcoming 'Jurassic World'
I can thank a decent portion of childhood to a green Jeep, a pissed off T-Rex, and Jeff Goldblum. If you were at all like me, child or adult, you loved Jurassic Park. It sits well through the ages as an incredible film of not only terrifying adventure but also a fantastic score, directorial presence, and phenomenal acting. As we have seen over the years this amazing movie has carried a continuous fan base and has yielded a quite impressive franchise. Still, Jurassic Park has been a tough act to follow as the following two sequels failed to live up to the caliber of the original
Jurassic Park
- This astounded us. Try to find a critical flaw in this movie, I dare you! We can thank the late Michael Crichton for such an amazing book and writing in such a mystifying fashion. The premise was not only interesting but seemingly believable as they took into account scientific progress and innovation while wrapping it within believable scenarios and plot twists. The acting performances were superb, even the kids. The score wowed us and kept us on the edge of our seats. And the special effects defied our imagination as to what we thought we could never see.
The Lost World
- OK, I was still a kid when I saw this one so it still set well with me but now I see its flaws gymnastics scene cringe. Still, the movie featured decent performances from Goldblum and Julianne Moore and I didn't completely hate Vaughn in it so there's that. But the movie lacked a good feel to it and consistent suspense. It cut certain corners and seemed more generic at parts that left an unsettling feeling at times. But we did get to see more Dinos in it and when you take it as a action packed adventured through a land before time, then it becomes easier to appreciate.
Jurassic Park 3
- UGH, I have heard different opinions on this one but personally I detest it. While I can appreciate the ole T-Rex vs Spino battle and various new elements to the story...I found this to be a really bad film filled with poor special effects, a stupid premise, and shitty acting performances (looking at you Téa Leoni). Oh, so one kid survived on the island without problem for weeks? Oh, so now we have super intelligent raptors that we are just now addressing? Oh, we got out of this one problem thanks to dumb luck and circumstance? While we can enjoy it for the same reasons as Jurassic Park 2, this one definitely left us with little hope for seeing a Jurassic Park movie that was not only visually impressive but also interesting as well.
Jurassic World
- So now we come to the next upcoming thrill ride. Will it be good? I don't know. Will I see it opening weekend. Hell yeah! This movie from the trailers seems like it has returned to impressive special effects and fantastic actors. Not to mention we return to the original premise which centers around the idea of a functioning dino park where humans try to play god and the screw everything up. That is something I can get behind. Still, one genetically engineered dinosaur is wreaking this much havoc (and in turn allowing other dinos to) after the park runs without issue for more than a decade? It's hard to believe without seeing the movie itself but it seems like there might be times when we just shake our heads at the basic plot holes allowing such chaos to transpire. But that's all speculation. Whether or not the plot is lacking we can still expect a lot of dino action, excellent special effects, and special agent Burt Macklin running around training dinosaurs which will be awesome. I don't expect it to be as good as the original nor should I try to. This will be a completely different film and more than likely has been made to be action eye-candy to the child in us all.
Afterthoughts
- So yeah, like a lot of you redditors I am mostly excited and extremely curious as to how the film will go. Will Chris Pratt be confined to dramatic one-liners or be let loose like in Guardians of the Galaxy? With the new dino be as terrifying as the T-Rex that chased our hearts? Will the movie pay homage to the majesty of the original? Time will tell but it will also tell us much more. This film will do financially well, that I am sure of. After all it will gain the attention of our curiosities as well as the excitement of kids around the globe who will contribute to its success with video games and toys. Will there be more Jurassic Park movies to come? After all, it's kind of difficult to see where else they could go with it. I know at one point they wanted to make dinos for the military (an idea that was thankfully scrapped). The idea of activists in defiance of Jurassic Park sounds near but that was sort of done with the 2nd. How many times can we try and build a park and get chases around by angry dinos? Like I said, time will tell.
TL;DR Jurassic World's plot seems iffy but will be impressive anyway. Will they make the same mistakes as the last two though? And will they make more?

[Spoilers] A few questions about Unforgiven [1992]
So, I just watched Unforgiven. I thought it was a great movie, but I have a few questions.
1)What was the point of English Bob? I thought he was a great character, but after being introduced, he is immediately emasculated. I suppose it was to show Little Bill's violence, but didn't they do that when he beat up Will Munny? That whole sequence could have been left out in my opinion and the film would have been the same.
2)Why is Ned's skin colour never mentioned? In that time period, being black would have obviously brought up some great difficulties, and yet the whole subject of race is completely avoided. Ultimately it doesn't affect the film overmuch but I thought it was a bit anachronistic.
Any thoughts?

Movies in the same vein as Guillermo del Toro's filmography?
Hey all,
I've been planning to re-watch all of Guillermo del Toro's movies and was hoping to include some films that took inspiration/influence from or are in the same sort of dark fairytale/sci-fi genre. Could even be as simple as a movie that "feels" like one of his. I'm going to be looking for myself at what makes his films so unique, and in doing so I like to look at other works in the same wheelhouse. I'd also like to keep the list exclusive to films that del Toro himself did not present/produce like The Orphanage or Julia's Eyes as I've already included those.
Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: Also, if you're a del Toro fan feel free to give me your reasoning as to why he's such a talented filmmaker and if there are any themes or common/similar traits that echo through his films!

What's the one movie theme that instantly gives you the nostalgia chills?
As big of a Star Wars fan as I am, I always get goosebumps when hearing the beginning of the Jurassic Park ending theme.
Takes me back to seeing the movie for the first time in theaters with my dad, and being completely awestruck by the sheer scale of everything. I loved dinosaurs as a kid (Shit, who didn't?!), and two scenes in particular stick out in my head: The introduction to the dinosaurs at the lake, and the T-Rex going after the lawyer. Sure, I was a very young kid and had a couple bad dreams, but I would beg to go back to the theater constantly so I could see the dinosaurs again and again

Think you've seen every classic mafia movie? Think again...
This month Grindhouse Releasing brought two lost gangster cult classics to the masses via BD/DVD with Massacre Mafia Style & Gone With the Pope. Both films were written, produced, directed, and starring Duke Mitchell an Italian-American 1960/70s era club-singer/actor "could've been" who obviously had to do things his way.
Both films were made in the mid 1970s where you could make a decent flick for a hundred grand or less.
Massacre Mafia Style is a violent over-the-top film about an exiled Godfathers son returning to America to take back the bookmaking & prostitute game in LA. After finding an adventure-thirsty childhood friend he becomes an out of control assassin who can't stop killing no matter where the order comes from. It has an awesome trailer.
Gone With the Pope has a really interesting backstory as post-production was never completed & when Grindhouse Releasing found it there was even missing reels. Bob Murawski, co-founder of GR & editor of films like Spider-man & Hurt Locker spent 15 years putting it together from where he first pulled it from a storage locker (where they had been stored for the previous 15 years since Duke Mitchell's death in 1981) in an LA garage.
This one is about a wise guy who is recently released from prison and asked to do one last job as a hitman. He uses the money from the job to give his also recently released buddies from prison a trip on a private yacht trip to Rome to relax and find their roots.
What he reveals when they arrive at the boot is that he has an alternative plan to kidnap the pope & hold him for ransom - one dollar from every Catholic in the world. Amazing right? It also has some over-the-top violence but is a much different film than MMS. Duke had illusions of grandeur when he made these flicks - it's almost like he resented Copolla and thought a real Italian-American who rubbed shoulders with real wise guys could tell a better story. This film is in many ways powerful there is a lot of spiritual struggle and anti-Catholicism views that feel very real. I loved this movie. It's a classic. Check the trailer - if the MMS trailer is a 10/10 then GWP's trailer is a 9.8 out of 10.
A couple of things about these films. Like I said Duke was a very talented artist who had illusions of grandeur - sometimes they surpass his vision, sometimes they're right on, and sometimes they fall short. There are unintentional laughs and intentional laughs. But there is also blood sweat & tears & balls in both as well. Speaking of balls - both films, aside from being overly violent, have lots of offensive language. Most offensive is the N word without the "a" ending. So be prepared for that if you think this is your cup of tea. I don't think Duke was racist, I just think he was real.
He wasn't a wise guy, he was a performer. But he definitely rubbed shoulders with as many wise guys as he did stars.
Props to Grindhouse Releasing for giving these flicks a new life.

Something neat for people like me to do when you are completely obsessed with a movie and can't get over it.
I was re-watching There Will Be Blood (for like the 10th time) this week and was, again, blown away. I found myself looking for interviews of the cast and Paul Thomas Anderson, reading about the trivia on IMDB, and generally trying to learn whatever I could about it. I was disappointed to find out that PTA had refused to do a commentary for the movie on the DVD release.
Eventually, I ended up downloading the script from the movie as a PDF file and skimming through it. I thought it was great, and decided to watch the movie again and read along with the script as it played. It was a truly eye opening experience. I felt like I was able to watch the movie in a whole new light. I learned a lot more about the characters and their underlying motivations, and learned more about the story by reading scenes that were not included in the final cut.
I also ended up doing this with another movie I am obsessed with; American Psycho. It was equally satisfying.
I plan on doing this with a few more of my favorite movies (looking forward to reading some Kubrik scripts!), and would encourage others to do the same. It is a very cool way to quell a raging obsession with a movie.

What are your thoughts on 'Contact?'
This movie is particularly important to me. When I was in middle school, my mom and I watched it at her suggestion. I was a bookworm and I loved science, and after that first viewing, it became one of my favorite movies.
But at that age, I had only a very basic understanding of its themes and ideas; I thought the Machine was cool, the music was good, and that seeing half of Jodie Foster's boob was one of the best parts. Rewatching it over the years since, however, has helped me really understand the movie, and its intent. Not only that, but I realized after a while how technically impressive it is. In my opinion, it's a really masterful example of a film made by an experienced and confident director.
Look, for example, at the scenes in the first thirty minutes or so of the movie, when Ellie is still in Puerto Rico. When she puts a pushpin into that poster of the stars in her room, she says "One down, couple billion to go." And then the scene cuts to her buying two more packages of those pins. Later on, the camera pans past that poster with hundreds of pushpins in it, suggesting that a lot of time has past.
Robert Zemeckis lets the camera do a lot of the talking for him. There's necessary exposition, and then there's what you can say without words. Zemeckis really knows when to use both. But this is all in regards to the craft of the film. I thought he also did a great job of translating Carl Sagan's realistic yet whimsical vision of first contact with aliens onto the big screen. Is it a bit oversentimental? Maybe. I think that might be the point. That whatever form this first contact takes, it'll affect us profoundly. Things that seem to exist in a separate realm from science, like love or religion, are in fact drawn to center stage because an event like this would mobilize all of our emotion and thought. They're part of us, and they have to be included in the conversation.
Since that first time all those years ago, I've returned to Contact with more and more appreciation for how well it handles these big ideas, but manages to keep the movie focused on Ellie.
Phew. That was pretty long-winded, my apologies. What are your thoughts on this movie?

The next scene he is in the hospital (possibly dead).

Anyone else read Gilgamesh the King by Silverberg? I feel like it would be great adapted as a 'classic' sci-fi movie -- and can I get a little love for Dwayne Johnson? Given his recent turn in Hercules, I think that with the right approach, he would actually do well as Gilgamesh, a la The Scorpion King.
And then throw in Vin Diesel as Enkidu. Major points also go to the book for a complex female character ('Inanna').

Fantastic movie, BTW. A real antidote to Fury or American Sniper.
The kid that Hook visits at the start and end of the movie - is that his son or little brother? Hook just seems too young to have a 5 or 6 year old. I'm guessing son which explains his affection for the young Ulster kid. And where was the kid living? Was it a boarding school? How could a young Army private afford a boarding school?
WTH would Hook's unit enter the Catholic neighbourhood without riot gear? That was the only part of the movie that really frustrated me from a realism point of view.
And the young Ulster kid who brings Hook to the bar - could anyone understand anything he was saying? I'm usually okay with Irish accents but his was just unintelligible.

How many of you genuinely watch movies at home without frequently being distracted by phones/tablets etc?
Ok, apologies in advance for a bit of a rant, but...
Everyone I know seems to have zero attention span these days and seem completely incapable of sitting down to watch a movie at home without whipping out their phone every 5 minutes, even worse they still claim to have watched the film and have an opinion on it.
I know that people will say it depends how gripping the story is but I call BS on that, unless it's just people I know they'll be intermittently distracted from beginning to end without giving it a proper chance.
I get that I'm probably more into my film than most, but is this the norm? Let's stick to watching a film for the first time, I get that if you're watching something a second time it's different.

Upcoming scifi movie 'Tomorrowland' is called 'A World Beyond' in Germany. What are examples for movies given stupid (or unnecessary) names (or translations) in your country?
I just don't get why they give it a different englisch name. If you change the title then make it something german. It was supposed to be called 'Projekt Neuland' (german for 'Project New Land') first but they changed it a few days ago. That would at least be okay because not everybody in Germany speaks english and would so at least know what to expect from the movie (kind of) but now it's just a different english title. Why? It's just unnecessary.

The Place Beyond the Pines
Just watched this movie and was completely transfixed by it. The trailer gave me the impression of a straightforward story told conventionally. This movie was so much more and so original. The performances were all around fantastic, Mendelsohn, Gosling, Cooper and DeHaan give it their all. The 3 part story arch especially felt fresh. How do you all feel about this film? What did you get from it? Interpretations?

I'm a bit of a suck for movies like this and would be disappointed if I missed out on watching it but no theaters are playing it, and from what I've been able to look up it's not playing in the U.S much either. Any ideas of what I can do or where to stream it would be helpful, Thanks!
Also this movie hasn't seem to come up at all on r/movies radar which is odd.

Al Pacino's 3 most diverse performances?
I have to write a paper for my Acting III class commenting on an actor's diversity in 3 or more roles. I didn't want to go with the obvious Daniel-Day-Lewis so I chose Al Pacino. I already have a few in mind but I was wondering what /r/movies thinks.

Best Animated Characters
There are tons of great animated characters that have come from movies. Lets discuss them.
I would say Shrek is one of them. Yes, I know he has a lot of sequels but Shrek remains the same. He's a loud, gross ogre who won't change himself for anyone. But he also has a heart of gold and manages to find the love of his life.
Tiana is also a great character. Not only is she the first African-American princess but she worked 2 jobs! 2 jobs! And despite all the crap she goes through, she manages to come out on top and realize her dream.
I would go on but I don't want to make this too long. What do you guys think?

Right in the feels
I'll say folks, I'm pretty sure the only movie that gives me chills every time I watch it (other than the roof tarring scene with Freeman's narration in Shawshank) is A League of Their Own. This movie constantly gets me, rolling at the jokes one minute then wanting to cry in the next sentence. I'm not even a baseball fan, but this movie just gets me.

Just finished watching Requiem for a dream
Holy fuck, that was one hell of a movie. I would say this is the movie that affected me the most. I'm not sure if this is normal but I cried three times during movie. I felt so, so, so bad for Sarah. Especially in the scene when she's talking to Harry about how lonely she is. The music played a big part too, it did a good job making the audience feel anxious and nervous.
It's not like a shoot up heroin or watch TV every single moment, but somehow, somehow I feel so connected to the characters. I can feel their anger, their depression, and their loneliness. This movie feels so realistic to me, it made the real world look fake. I should probably go give my mom a big hug right now.

What's a good movie to watch with a 13-year old younger brother?
Hey all, I go to college in another state, and this is my last couple of days I'd spring break- I want to watch a movie with my brother, who is 13, and loves action, adventure and scifi, but I would like to choose something a little less "standard" than Indy Jones, Star Wars, or the Avengers, and less gory than saving private Ryan (one of my favorite movies of all time). Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Ranking the Jerks of 1995 Cinema: A collection of fashionable males, former pop stars and step brothers
1995 was loaded with jerks. It was a good year for people who weren't necessarily killers or despots. The jerks are people who make life uncomfortable, annoy many and bully the hero (think Biff).
Shannon - Mallrats - Dude was a bully and was responsible for many Volkswagen references.
Roach - Demon Knight - Only jerks wipe up magical blood blocking evil people.
Deebo - Friday - Classic big jerk who intimidates smaller people.
Eric Gordon - Billy Madison - The classic weasel jerk. If you don't feed him triscuits he will make a scene.
Rex Manning - Empire Records - He had a song called "Say No More Mon Amour."
Rick Sanford - Angus - Classic high school jerk bully
Paul - Tommy Boy - Did you eat paint chips as a kid?
Amber - Clueless - Whatever!
Lolita - Welcome to the Dollhouse - "Because you're ugly." Lolita is the worst
Tony Perkis - Heavyweights - Attention campers. Lunch has been cancelled due to lack of hustle. Deal with it.
Goro - Mortal Kombat - Dude has four arms, bullies everybody and crushes $500 sunglasses.

Dreamworks' Home (2015) Quick Review/Commentary/First Impressions
You know, I’m starting to not like going to the movie theatres. What I did like, ironically, was this movie. So, Dreamworks’ Home, based on Adam Rex’s The True Meaning of Smekday, follows a group of aliens named The Boovs as they try to find a new home to colonize, Earth. However, an outcast Boov named Oh, played by Jim Parsons, accidently attracts their enemy, Gorg. While trying to fix his mistake, Oh unexpectedly meets a human girl named Tip, played by Rihanna, who is on a quest to find their mother, and so these two unlikely heroes set off on an adventure together. Now, I had pretty mediocre expectations coming in this movie from the trailers, but it just surprised me. What I liked the most in this movie were probably the aliens. They would probably be in the dictionary next to “irony”. In fact, they probably represent what everyone acts like these days: unwilling to change, always running away and almost never trying something new. I somehow can relate to their philosophy, and I know it’s pretty flawed. But I don’t think they had enough development as to how it was flawed. They probably should have explained a bit more throughout the runtime, but it’s a minor setback. Also liked their customs, though in a really weird way. Now that I think about it, almost everyone in the movie acts this way, Tip, Captain Smek, everyone. Almost everyone. And this movie is just one good conundrum because from that observation, it teaches a moral really well: that you sometimes can learn interesting things if you took risks and not just run away. That message will stick with you when you grow up, guaranteed. As with most kid’s movies, they like to try out new jokes and one-liners. Some worked really well, and some don’t. I especially loved the flashbacks, which, for some reason, I thought were extremely funny if you pondered them. The music was from meh to good, not awesome, but not terrible. There was still some underdevelopment with Tip’s past experiences, but I still got to love the characters. The plot is pretty down to earth though, I’ll admit that some parts were pretty awkward, but it sort of works as you’re trying out new things throughout the movie, am I right? And so, this movie will make you have a good time, no alcohol required. Just make sure you watch it together as a family, because it feels like a family movie. So what did you guys think of the movie? Comment below, let me know.

A question about The Grand Budapest Hotel
Forgive me if my anaylsis is off here, as my normal movie intake would be the filmographical equivalent to a diet of fast food (my tastes in movies arent all that refined).
I watched this movie for the first time recently, and while I loved it there was something I noticed that seemed odd. During the course of the movie some of the actors seem to be introduced as the actor themselves, rather than the character. For example, when the characters are trading punches at the reading of the will and suddenly BAM! William Dafoe. It almost seemed intentional to invoke "holy crap, william dafoe is in this movie" with a secondary "wow, this guy is menacing". Also, during the calling tree of all the concierges there was suddenly Bill Murray, and later, back at the hotel, suddenly Owen Wilson.
This didnt ruin the experience for me, but it did take me off guard, as I had not really experienced it before. Did anyone else notice this?

Its one of those movies I just can't NOT love. But it seems to draw a lot of lines in the sand for people. When I talk to non-industry people the majority seem to enjoy it, but when I speak to people who work in the film industry or just teach film classes they seem to hate it, specifically for the anachronism.

I'm trying to watch more foreign films recently. I've seen most of the top films from a lot of different countries and want to get more in depth with each. Plus I want to see what countries cinema /r/Movies loves.
To answer my own question, I would say Korean Cinema is my favorite with a top 5 including: The Chaser, Oldboy, Masquerade, Memories of Murder, and I Saw the Devil. That was actually really tough to only pick 5. So if you have some must watch movies that don't make it into the top 5, just make mention of them anyway. Run All Night (2015) review
Run All Night has an extremely simple story. Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson) tries to protect his son, Mike (Joel Kinnaman), from the wrath of Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris). Maguire is a former criminal kingpin whose son, Danny (Boyd Holbrook), Jimmy kills in order to protect Mike. Jimmy was Shawn’s hit man while he was still in the criminal business. Run All Night breaks the one rule for movies with extremely simple stories, and that is keeping it simple. John Wick and The Raid did an extraordinarily great job of keeping their movie simple. Run All Night could have worked as a shallow thrill ride, but instead it tries to put unnecessary depth in its characters. Price (Common), is a professional hit man like Jimmy, plays absolutely no part in the story other than being the scary side villain. Ed Harris plays a criminal kingpin who’s trying to be a legitimate business man and rid himself of his criminal doings. If Ed Harris played a balls out villain, the movie would have been better. The two sons whom the plot is centered around are extremely forgettable. And of course Liam Neeson plays regular old Liam Neeson, an emotionally broken/alcoholic, estranged father with a badass set of deadly skills.
The one credit I give this movie is it had the nerve to be rated R. The action is very violent and appropriate to the world we are introduced to. Most of the action scenes are chases, and while they are cut way too fast, I wouldn't particularly call them “bad”. Using something I can only dub as “Google Earth cam”, the movie gives a rather good sense of geography to the action. You always have a good idea of where people are in relation to other people. If it wasn’t cut nearly every 3 seconds the action alone would have been enough to sell the movie as a download. Sadly, the action just isn’t good enough. There is no stand out parts, lines, or deaths. The action is rather bland and you will mostly forget everything that happens the moment the credits roll.
Overall, the movie is competently made, but suffers from an identity crisis. Is it trying to be an in depth character study? Or is trying to be a shallow thrill ride? Run All Night tries to be a little of both, but fails in both categories.

Questions: A tree of life : What is the bach music played during the priest sermon on Job
In the movie "The tree of life" from T. Mallick you can hear a prelude or a fugue from J.S. Bach. Over the song, you hear a sermon from a priest about the book of Job. During these moments, you also see a child playing in the church. Just before that, your hear the famous toccata and fugue, which is played on organ by B. Pitt in the movie. But, this is not the one I am looking after.
I tried to find it on my recording of Glenn Gould - Well Tempered Clavier- and it doesn't seem to be on this recording. Could anyone can give me name of this prelude/fugue?

In retrospect, what I've discovered as the differences between Star Trek and Star Wars thematically.
Let me preface this with the face that I don't prefer one over the other. Both Trek and Wars fill a different need in Sci-Fi, and different roles thematically. Neither is inferior to the other, just different.
Except the Star Wars prequels. Fuck those. Those were just bad movies. So from this point on, when I talk about Star Wars I mean the good ones, the Original Trilogy.
Star Wars : Basically it is a classic Good versus Evil mixed with David and Goliath. There is good, and there is evil. There's really no middle ground. There are exceptions, but those fall under character growth and become part of the good guys. (Han and Lando mainly)
- A New Hope: The first movie sets the tone, gives us the sides. Establishes Space Magic, and one of the best bad guys ever, before he was ruined decades later.
- Empire Strikes Back: One of the first movies I'd ever seen where the good guys basically lost. Amazing movie, and truly sets the Empire up as a threat.
- Return of the Jedi: The resurgence of good, gathering all their forces in a win or die scenario. Redemption of evil into good. And a nice side theme of an alternate way of how a relationship with the Native Americans could have gone with the Rebel Alliance and the Ewoks.
Star Trek: Basically this series explores the "human" condition. Each film in this series can be broken down into an exploration of human emotion or human ideals. There is some good vs. evil, but it isn't as central as the human element. * The Motion Picture - Arguably the most Star Trek of them all. And boring. Jesus, it's boring. But it explores the questions of "Who are we?" "What is our purpose here?" "What is my destiny?". It also explores the paradigm of being careful what you wish for. Kirk wished for career advancement, and realizes that he misses the captain's chair. * Wrath of Khan - Vengence. Basically an allegory of Moby Dick, meshed with a submarine movie. But it also explores cheating death, facing odds that seem insurmountable, growing old, and sacrifice. And manly tears. Many, many manly tears. * Search for Spock - Friendship. Basically you take the Kirk from Motion Picture and see how he's grown as a person. Would that Kirk have sacrificed his career? Maybe. But this Kirk, aged and more experience absolutely was willing to sacrifice his career, his ship, and ultimately his son... for just the body of his friend. When he set out, he had no idea he could get Spock back. He just did it for his best friend. * Voyage Home - Basically stop fucking up the earth. Oh, and if you're good at something, people will work towards putting you where you best fit. * Final Frontier - Outside of Insurrection and Nemesis, the worst Star Trek film of all, but still better than those other two. Basically it's an exploration of God, and apparently William Shatner's ego (as much as I love the guy). * Undiscovered Country - An allegory for the end of the Cold War. Forgiving enemies, letting the better part of yourself lead the way (Kirk at the end, Gorkon). Retirement. Peace above all.
