I know it matters not in regards to his talent (which is stupendous) but I can't help think from a personal struggle that he was but could not admit to it due to the bigotry of the times.

Why is The Fifth Element such a beloved movie?
I watched it the other day and it seemed like a regular movie to me. I didn't get very into it because I thought the girl was annoying, and Bruce Willis was too masculine and too emotionally distant to be relatable. What is it about this movie that draws people in?

What do we think of the film God's Pocket (2014)?
Starring John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christina Hendricks, Richard Jenkins and sporting a memorable cameo by Sophia Takal, God's Pocket is a tale of blue-collar life and death in the unforgiving streets of any modern city.
The movie strikes me as particularly well written, perhaps that's because, like one of the movie's main characters, I'm also a journalist and an alcoholic. What do we think of this film? One of Hoffman's last.

From the lighting to the art direction at certain parts of the movie, it was shot more like a legit spy thriller than a comedy which, I personally really enjoyed. And if anyone took cineshots of the film, feel free to post them!

2014 will likely end up with 10 movies in the IMDB top 250, equaling 1995 as the year with the most movies in the list.
Currently 2014 has 6 movies in the IMDB top 250: Interstellar, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Gone Girl, Guardians of the Galaxy, and X-Men:DoFP.
X- Men and Guardians of the Galaxy are likely to drop off the list at some point (superhero movies tend to rank high initially before dropping off).
Whiplash, Birdman, and The Imitation Game will almost certainly hit the list once they have the required number of votes. Add to this the Indian movies PK and Haider, which are currently sitting at 8.8 and 8.7 respectively, and Palme d'Or winner Winter Sleep (currently at 8.7).
This would give 2014 ten movies in the top 250, tied with 1995 as the year with the most movies on the list.
Personally I'd like to see both Nightcrawler and Edge of Tomorrow in the list as well. Gyllenhaal's acting performance in Nightcrawler was simply amazing while Edge of Tomorrow was one of the best summer action movies I've seen in a long time. Time will tell whether these two movies can sneak into the list.
What does everyone else think? Has 2014 been an unusually high quality year for movies?

The Moral and Story-Arc of 'Fury' [SPOILERS]
I really enjoyed Brad Pitt's WWII movie 'Fury' which came out a couple months ago.
Here's my take on it. Brad Pitt's character ('WarDaddy') was a seasoned, talented professional soldier and leader of his men. But in the bloody circumstances on the front lines he had lost his humanity, and even as he struggled to maintain his civilized habits, we see that the war has corrupted and tainted him. So WarDaddy had to die at the end. There was no other possible conclusion.
The most moving part of the movie is when WarDaddy takes the already-surrendered Kraut who is waving around pictures of his wife and kids, throws the pics on the ground and careful forces Norman the newbie to point the revolver at him and shoot him point-blank. The reason is supposedly to get Norman to be able to pull the trigger later when he'd have to, but it's such a heinous war-crime in that I personally could not forgive him. He was a tainted character - not as evil as the SS monsters he was hunting, but still perhaps no longer fit for civilian life.
So in the end in one of the last major skirmishes of the war, the blood finally catches up with him and takes him down. It's a tragedy because we sense that he's a good man who has struggled to do the right thing in a terrible bloody place. But he'd become what he'd despised and there was no saving him. His death was the only way for story to make sense as a tragedy. Otherwise the movie would have been a very strange, unbalanced story.
Thoughts anyone?

The most moving part of the movie is when WarDaddy takes the already-surrendered Kraut who is waving around pictures of his wife and kids, throws the pics on the ground and careful forces Norman the newbie to point the revolver at him and shoot him point-blank. That moment cried out to me as an act of pure evil.
The reason for it was to get Norman to be able to pull the trigger later when he'd have to defend the tank, but I could not forgive him. He was a tainted character - not as evil as the SS monsters he was hunting, but perhaps no longer fit for civilian life.
So in the end in one of the last major skirmishes of the war, he loses sight of his own wish for survival and takes his men on a suicide mission. The war finally catches up with him and take him down.

His death was the only way for story to make sense as a tragedy. Otherwise the movie would have been a very strange, unbalanced story.
These things have to balance. The audience can't easily digest the continual success of an evil character, nor the complete failure of a genuinely good one. So WarDaddy had to die.
Thoughts anyone?

Is there a way to make IMDb collages?
I am an avid Last.fm user. It's nice because it allows you to track your listening habits via "Scrobbling" your play counts. After a week, or a month, or a year, you can go to various websites like http://ift.tt/1EiSR0Z or http://ift.tt/1yOfoml and make an array of the titles you've listened to in that period of time. For example here's my 3x3 for this week.
I've noticed goodreads was doing something like this for the end of the year as well.
Does anyone know of any places like this to make IMDb collages with check-ins? It'd be a cool way of looking back over what films I watched this year.

Is traditional 35 mm film better quality than 4k digital?
The new Star Wars film has inspired me to ask this. The best cinema where I live has gone 100% digital with the option of 35 mm as well. The biggest screen has installed a 4K ultra high-definition projector.
I have two questions. Since J. J. Abrams has filmed The Force Awakens in only 35 mm film and 70 mm IMAX film, would they project the movie using the film or convert it to 4K digital? Also, which is better quality?

Still haunted by a horror movie scene I accidentally saw as a kid: kids jailed under stairs/a woman boiling to death in a bathtub?
About 20-25 years ago I was around 5 years old. I was flipping through the TV and I came across a scene from a horror movie that has terrified me ever since. Would love to re-watch it now as an adult so I can finally stop having nightmares about it:
There is an old man pulling a young woman down some stairs into a basement. I think she is in a long nightgown and has long blonde hair.
Underneath the staircase is a make-shift jail with iron bars. There are children reaching out screaming desperately. I (think) their hairstyles were afros, and maybe one of the children looked similar to a young Michael Jackson.
The old man then walks the young girl over to this (claw foot?) bathtub and forces her into either a pool of acid or boiling water, and she screams and (presumably?) is boiled alive...
Any help with this would be awesome! My 5-year-old self would greatly appreciate it.

Why aren't directors making more movies like Pulp Fiction?
What I'm trying to ask is, why are most of the new movies coming out of Hollywood so shitty? I understand that movies like "Transformers 3" and "Fast & Furious 6" make money, but I believe movies like "Pulp Fiction" "The Usual Suspects" and "Snatch" could make a lot of money if directors made modern day movies similar to those. Guess I wanna see more good films and less CGI bullshit.

Would it be possible to create something that allowed redditors to get film recommendations based on what other redditors with similar tastes have enjoyed.
This may already exist but I've tried looking at can't find anything.
Basically what I was thinking is that all interested redditors would submit a list of films they really enjoyed so just to keep things easy, let's say I enjoyed films A, B, C, D. Then another user who also liked films A, B, C could see that they had a similar taste to me and would then be able to try film D knowing that there was a decent chance they'd like that too.
No idea how we'd get it to work and I don't know if any of you even care but I just thought it was a nice idea. I know there is/was a chrome app for rotten tomatoes which did a similar thing, allowing you to find critics who liked the films you did but this could be on a much bigger scale.

Subtext and Meaning in Film. Can it be unintentional?
I was listening to the /Filmcast review of the Australian film "Babadook" and they got into different theories about the meaning and subtext of the film and I had a thought. Do you think it's possible for a filmmaker to unintentionally have meaning or subtext in a film. To unknowingly put deeper levels into their films? The scenario I imagine is someone asking a filmmaker something like "Wow, I really got that whole 'alcoholism' subtext" and the filmmaker having no idea what he was talking about. Thoughts? Examples? Thanks!

What is up with birdman?
Ok so this is the film I've wanted to see most this year. The thing is it came out way back in October, and I just can't find it?! What's the reason behind this? It's driving me crazy. I've read so many reviews on it praising it, and speaking on how amazing it is, and how Michael Keaton will most likely get some Oscar buzz from it, and what not. I've seen the rotten tomatoes score, I've seen youtubers review it, but I CAN'T FIND IT! I've been to three theaters, I've searched online for it in every theater within 500 miles, I've searched online where it's playing, I even got desperate enough to try, and torrent it, but couldn't even find as much as a cam!? Why? Where did this movie go? Please help, I just want to see the stupid thing!

[SPOLIERS] Gone Girl Questions
Just saw Gone Girl, made me think a lot.
Had some questions about motives, that I am still curious about.
SPOILERS!
When she first escapes, does she have a long term goal? Is she gonna permanently be on the run now? [Plan A]
She obviously didn't intend to lose all her money. So calling her old boyfriend was now her plan B. What was her thinking here? To swindle him and vanish yet again? [Plan B]
Did she plan to keep running and only changed plans when her ex was obsessive, or did she plan to use him by killing him and framing him as a way to return to her old life the whole time? [Plan C]
It seemed like she made a decision to go back when watching her husband on tv while eating pudding.
Also, the ending. Staying together for the kid seems a weak as reason for staying with her. I think it's just a convenient excuse to stay so that he doesn't actually have to admit that part of him does actually want to stay, despite/inspite of everything.
Why would she want to stay and have his kid? I think she thinks needs to maintain the perfect facade for the media of happy all american wife as her public image is all she has now, and if that crumbled she would have nothing left.
I am kinda lost. Can anyone explain the motives?

Whiplash Plot Holes?
I've read in articles that Whiplash has several plot holes, but none elaborate. Can someone do so here? Perhaps I was too taken by the performances and finale, but I loved the hell out of this film.
The only implausibility I see in the end is that it seems a bit insane that Simmons' character would sabotage himself AND the band he was conducting just to get back at Teller's character. But still, a part of me thinks he's psychotic enough to do it.

Help! I'm looking for a film! Dark comedy/murder theme?
If there's a better sub for this, please let me know and I'm sorry!
So, there's a film I'm thinking of, but I can't remember for the life of me who is in it or what it's called. I recall seeing it in my early teens, so it must've come out pre-2007. I don't recall the film being particularly old, so I can't imagine it coming out any earlier than 1995 either.
It's set in an American suburb at night for part of the film, and involves several people being either accidentally killed or killed because they witnessed a previous murder. If I recall correctly, someone gets killed with a shovel and another character drowns, and I think one of them is a vicar.
Pretty sure the main character is one of those hapless types whom bad things just happen to. Film is a pretty dark comedy.
That's about as much detail as I can remember, and it's driving me crazy! If you can help at all, it's much appreciated. Thanks for reading :)

What movie do you think would be great for a sequel? Conversely, what is a sequel you reeeeally wish was never made?
For me, the sequel i think would be great would be a Django Unchained Part Two. really. heres why- Django Unchained is basically just an origin story. it shows how django went from a poor frightened slave to an outrageous badass with a slick skill set and concrete sense of justice. this character is only fully formed in the finale of Django Unchained and i would love to see that characters story really take off.
sequel i wish was never made? ugh, either Taken 2 or Speed 2. i have nothing against mindless action movies, but these movies both were good action movies that circled around very specific, atypical events happening by chance. the idea that these circumstances would recreate themselves for these characters is ridiculous and it shows in the finished product.

What are your "hard-to-watch" films? Like, they're hard to watch because they bring up a lot of emotions that could be hard to deal with, so you avoid re-watching or will only watch with someone who hasn't seen them. And why?
My two biggest would probably be Lost In Translation and Spirited Away.
LIT mostly because I watched it when I was younger and have always wanted to fall in love in Japan, and it hasn't happened, so I have a hard time dealing with seeing it unfold on screen -- the pangs of regret are real.
SA because it inflicts great memories with great people whom I no longer associate with. It makes me sad, and it makes me wish I was a kid again. I f-ing love that movie, though.

What makes '12 Years a Slave' different/better than 'Unbroken'?
I just saw Unbroken, and liked it okay. I didn't go crazy for it, but not against it. I've been seeing a lot of people label it from mediocre to absolute shit.
This got me thinking, a lot of the qualms that people have with it were also in 12 Years a Slave, a very-much loved and respected film.
12 Years a Slave, as well as Unbroken, uses a Passion of the Christ method of showing characters be beaten and abused for a majority of the movie. Both offer flashbacks that show the character as a great man with few flaws. Both have their character have one major antagonist that beats the shit out of them the most. Both end with a written epilogue about the true story. My point is, both films have a lot of similarities, not just in story, but their portrayal in general.
I am NOT saying that the two are equal in quality, however, I want to know what people think makes one film better or worse than the other.
Sure, 12 Years has McQueens great direction (that loooooong hanging shot), but other than that, why is it seen as a great film and Unbroken a bad one?

Let's talk about Road to Perdition (2002).
I am 24 and didn't really get into movies or television until college (2008). Because of this, I hadn't even heard of Road to Perdition until very recently. I picked up the five dollar fullscreen DVD and gave it a watch and really enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed it so much that I recently re-bought it on bluray. However, I just checked the IMDB rating and it only has a 78/72. I just wanted to see what others thought about the movie.

Write a brief plot for a movie based solely on your username.
Example:
Axl Komix - A young man imagines his life on the internet under the username "Axl Komix" as a comic book (animated) adventure, quickly becoming more and more detached from reality as he becomes absorbed in this fantasy.
Not the best example, but you get the gist.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy with a twist...
Use your imagination. What if the Fellowship was made up of: The Ninja Turtles (tasked to bring the Ring to Mordor) Wolverine Optimus Prime Harry Potter Katniss Everdeen & Luke Skywalker
(Each character is of their movie adaptation)
They experienced every thing that happened within the trilogy. Facing Lurtz & his Uruk-hai, going through the Mines of Moria, Battle for Helms Deep & Minus Tirith, Battle at the Black Gates etc.. How would these adventure be different with this version of the Fellowship & would they succeed in destroying the Ring? Also, how much harder or easier would their adventures be?

Are animated movies better than live action?
In my very humble opinion, the average animated film blows out the quality of the average live action film. I don't know if this is because Disney and Pixar are just better at producing movies than Sony/others, but in my experience, I generally enjoy animated movies more. Opinions?

40's or 50's movie with a teacher whose student goes on to be the president?
My wife is losing her mind trying to remember the name of this movie. The teacher falls in love with someone else (another teacher?) at the school, marries them and when he goes to WWII, and never returns. One of the students tries to find her for years and she finally ends up finding him right before his inaugural speech. He says he has been looking for her and that she is the best teacher he ever had.

What part of a movie do you usually enjoy the most?
For me it's definitely the first act.
As the viewer you are submerged in an unknown world with new characters. Learning this world is a refreshing experience. A promise of a great story is being made, the screwups don't usually happen in this introductory part of the movie. However it turns out in the end, at this moment there's still a big potential present of a grand poetic finale. Basically, most of the dissappointments that you can have with a movie haven't happened yet at this part. This is also the part where the story teller tries to interest the viewer in the story. A big effort is being made to make you care and invest in the movie, while later on this isn't the case anymore.
Strange enough, I noticed that with books I have the opposite, the best part is near the end. It's because with books a much greater emotional connection is being built up between the reader and the characters. The catharsis at the end of a book is usually more profound than can be achieved with a 90 minutes of film, hence this difference with books.
What are your opinions on the most enjoyable part of a movie?

However I am not a registered Google developer and don't want to pay the fee (even if it's only 5$) if no one would use this.

Interstellar Plan B
In the movie Interstellar Plan A is to bring the human race to a habitable planet, and if that is not possible, then Plan B, which is to bring embryos and start a new human colony. My question is why must they do Plan B? Why does the team feel obligated to continue the human race? Plan A makes sense because they want to survive, but if they cannot survive, why must they ensure that human life continues? The embryos have not been born yet, and have do not have a want to live.

Being Calvin (2013)
Being Calvin is a short film about a day dreaming young man in love. It is about the misfortunes of infatuation, the common pain of rejection, and the ultimate triumph to overcome hurt with the support of one's friends.
Give it a watch, or skip through some scenes. But let us know what you think.

I think The Imitation Game is a wonderful film, and here is why:
I have just finished watching the film The Imitation Game and I am very happy having seen it. The film, directed by my countryman Morten Tyldum (Norwegian), is among my top three favourite films of 2014. It's not a perfect film, far from it, but it is thoroughly enjoyable and extremely interesting. Here are the films finest points:
Fantastic choice of lead actor. Benedict Cumberbatch not only looks very similar to Alan Turing, but his acting is superb. Gone are Cumberbatch's quirky, arrogant Sherlock, his evil villains and other forgettable roles. Instead we are presented with a profoundly vulnerable young man whose intellect dwarfs everyone else's. A wounded man, as well, whose deep emotional and psychological wounds remain open and festering; making him a difficult man and not some sort of superhero.
Interesting story. The story of Alan Turing haven't previously been told other than on rather dull documentaries and in books. Nothing wrong with that, I love both mediums, but the if ever a man deserved a feature film it is Turing. Alan Turing arguably made sure the Allies won the second world war and invented the computer. He is one of the 20th centuries' pivotal characters and Britain rewarded him by arresting him and treating him like garbage because he was gay. Britain is forever shamed by this and still haven't apologised properly for its appalling treatment of homosexuals. This film highlights these points seemingly effortlessly and yet the film is far more a thriller than a political film trying to push an agenda.
The script. The film is 114 minutes long and you are not bored a single moment. There is little or no filler- moments and every dialogue and action serves the plot. There are no plotholes (see, it is possible to make a film devoid of inane plotholes) the science is presented realistically and not in a dumbed-down 'Murican way.
Young Turing (Alex Lawther). The casting of young Turing deserves a reward. This young man has a great future. It is not often that I cry watching films, but this young man's portrayal of a bullied, socially awkward homosexual boy brought several tears to my eyes.
These points being made, I feel the need to critique the film on certain points:
Female lead. Why in the hell Tyldum chose Keira Knightley to play Turing's dear friend Joan Clarke is beyond me. Maybe he was forced to put in a pretty face by the money-people behind this film, I don't know. What I do know is that Knightley is the single worst actress I know of. She overacts in every single scene, and her character is given far too much space in this film, which should have been more about Turing and less about this woman. Also, Knightley doesn't look anything remotely like Clarke. Clarke was a handsome enough woman, but she was not conventionally pretty. Knightley simply looks totally misplaced.
Length. It is a rather short film and I think it could've been longer. It is almost entirely about Turing's work on the Enigma code and I left wanting far more about his life after WWII and also more about his early years.
The ending. I am not going to spoil it, but the film makes some closing statements that in no way are universally accepted by Turing- followers. If Tyldum did so in order to create controversy, I don't know, but it almost seems like it. I think it tarnished the film's otherwise sterling character.

Online source for Citizenfour?
Haven't been able to find it showing in any theaters, so I was wondering if a digital copy has slipped through the cracks somewhere along the way. Really would like to see this film, any help is appreciated.

Someone created a drinking game for The Interview. What better way to celebrate liberty than to get absolutely trashed while watching it?

All movies tell the same story?
I have heard of this theory a few times. I am looking for information about a theory that all movies tell the same story. I really don't have any other information, and I wasn't sure where to post this so hopefully this is the best place for it! I have done a Google search, but the results are not what I am looking for.

Spoilers - This Is The End / The Interview
I've noticed a trend in which James Franco spoils the end of the movie but the audience is too busy laughing to realize what is happening.
This Is The End:
James Franco says something along the lines of "and then he eats my face off" and people sort of ignore it because they were high af.
That's how he dies.
The Interview:
Hot glasses lady asks Skylark how he's gonna assassinate Kim
James Franco says something along the lines of Bullet Proof Vest / Shoot Kim / Seal Team Six / Etc.
Then it happened!
I expected the whole thing :'(

Uhh American Sniper...
I am super excited to see this movie and the trailers and tv spots had it released for Christmas Day, but now on fandango it says the release date is January 16. What happened?

This is why I like practical effects over CGI. For The Dark Knight, Nolan and his team actually flipped an 18-wheeler end-over-end across one of the busiest streets in Chicago.

What is your favorite muted movie / alternate music combination?
Ever mute a movie and watch it while some music of your choice plays?
My choice is Cameron's The Abyss (1989) with the album Echoes by The Rapture (2003).

Documentaries about failed movie projects.
I recently watched bot "Lost in La Mancha" and "Jodorowsky's Dune".
Both documentaries were fantastic, are there any other films that chronicle failed or problematic movie productions?
