People who watch movies and easily identify themes, allegories and the like: How do you do it?

Is there a method to it or are the messages just instantly clear to you?

Personally I only see things like this if it has already been pointed out to me; I'm so bad at it that I would have struggled to figure out that American Psycho had a lot of anti-capitalism messages if it hadn't been on the info section on the TV.
