Subtext and Meaning in Film. Can it be unintentional?

I was listening to the /Filmcast review of the Australian film "Babadook" and they got into different theories about the meaning and subtext of the film and I had a thought. Do you think it's possible for a filmmaker to unintentionally have meaning or subtext in a film. To unknowingly put deeper levels into their films? The scenario I imagine is someone asking a filmmaker something like "Wow, I really got that whole 'alcoholism' subtext" and the filmmaker having no idea what he was talking about. Thoughts? Examples? Thanks!
