I Think I've Cracked the Code for PTA's Recent Films.
"If you leave here, I don't ever want to see you again. You will be my sworn enemy in the next life. I will show you no mercy."-Lancaster Dodd.
This is a line from The Master which I think ties in his trilogy of love/hate relationship starting from there will be blood to The Master and finally Inherent Vice. Although I could have added Punch-drunk Love to this mix I think of that film (probably my favourite of his) as an interlude between magnolia and there will be blood which is when his major Directorial shift in style and aesthetic happened.
Whether it be Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday or Lancaster Dodd and Freddie Quell and our recent "partners" Doc Sportello and Bigfoot Bjornsen. These three Films have all received the same criticism from audiences, which is that there all vague when it comes to plot and less direct than his previous movies when it comes to the messages he sends.
I think that Line from The Master helps clear everything out. His films (as of recently) have been about these two souls travelling through lives meeting each other at different points in history and although they don't know each other they cant help but feel they should be together and in some cases (There Will Be Blood) it doesn't work out. but for the others there's nearly always this tense homoerotic atmosphere between the two characters.
Maybe I'm pushing it a little but to me this is just a jumping off point for more ideas to come. Feel free to Poke wholes in it or help me elaborate. so?, what do you guys think?
