Looking for the title of a courtroom drama (knowing some plot details)

Không có nhận xét nào :

Hi! I would really like to find this movie which I think it's from the 80s or 90s.

What I remember is (of course, SPOILERS ahead): * 1. it's courtroom drama * 2. the defendant is accused of self-defense murder (she stabbed a guy who was raping her in her apartment) * 3. while the crime was happening, her lover (a married man) was outside the window on the fire escape ladder and watched the whole scene * 4. in reality, she planned the whole thing (she usually likes rough sex and the supposed "raper" was one of her lovers and it was common for them to do it while she was asking him to stop - there was loud music in the room and a recording of her screams could be interpreted both ways) * 5. her motive was to make her relationship with the married man public and destroy his marriage * 6. her and the married man were in a relationship when they were younger and climbed together a mountain which - I think - had "devil" in its name (he frequently has flashbacks of this during the trial and this helps him understand the truth at the end) * 7 she gets away with it because he understands everything too late and cannot be involved in another trial for the same crime

Sorry, but I don't remember any of the actors. I thought the married man could be Harrison Ford, but I think I'm getting mixed up with Presumed Innocent.

Thanks to anyone who has a better memory that I do!!!

Does the Force Awakens trailer reveal the presence of another original trilogy character? (Possible spoilers)

Không có nhận xét nào :

It seems like the ghost of Anakin Skywalker may be present in The Force Awakens, at least assuming that the first voice you hear in the trailer is actually Luke Skywalker. He says: "The Force is Strong in my family. My father HAS it."

Doesn't sound like had at all. So maybe Anakin is guiding Luke the Hermit?

Who knows but this movie is going to be AWESOME. I had very low expectations for this movie but now they've shot way, way up.

It's a stretch but it's all I think of when I see Pratt in the trailers.

Just watched "The Road" (2009). A dark, emotional sledgehammer that managed to leave me weeping for joy at the end, in spite of an uncertain, bleak future for all involved. Wow. That's some serious film making right there.

Không có nhận xét nào :

I've avoided this one because of how dark I heard it was. But those people who said it manages to actually be uplifting in the end (somehow) were right. This film is actually more of an inspiration than the movies that follow the cookie cutter "man faces failure, overcomes failure and gets the girl in the end" structure. Great, great movie

Không có nhận xét nào :

I just rewatched Suicide Kings on Netflix (great movie by the way) and looked into the actors filmographies. Sean Patrick Flanery, of Boondocks Saints/Young Indiana Jones fame, is 49-years-old. It kind of surprised me considering he looks so young. Are there any other actors, besides Keanu Reeves obviously, whose age would surprise people?

For anyone curious about the teaser for "The Visit", here's a rundown.

Không có nhận xét nào :

I saw it in front of Unfriended but for whatever reason it hasn't been released online. Basically it starts with that kid from Alexander/Bad day and his sister visiting their grandparents. They're in their room and the grandpa tells them to never leave the room after 9:30. They hear spooky shenanigans commence, so they walk outside and they see the grandpa scratching at the door across the hall. The typical montage of weird things happen followed by a Skype chat with "Mom, something is wrong here!" and then "it's only a few more days!" and then ends with the kid standing in the kitchen, looking out the window and the grandma holding a cookie tray while saying "can you get inside the oven to clean it?" Then she lunges at the kid screaming and it cuts to the title with "Directed/Produced/Written by M Night Shyamalan. Yeah it looks absolutely embarassing.

Here's the thing about Jurassic World...

Không có nhận xét nào :

First off, the trailer was horrible, and the movie looks horrible. It looks like a typical Hollywood popcorn pusher with bad CGI, worse dialogue, and an impossibly dull plot.

So we finally have a theme park that's been open an generating revenue. Done. You know what would make it great? A genetically-engineered super-monster that can apparently turn invisible (?) and has a horrendously misanthropic disposition. Sorry, Christ Pratt, dinosaurs aren't wow enough. Not after the first park got a bunch of people killed, the expedition to the breeding island got a whole city demolished, and whatever the hell happened in the third one.

This is lazy as hell. We should be done with parks by now.

After all, the title of the picture is "Jurassic World." And that's exactly the movie I would like to see, where all of our power-hungry mistakes led to the dinos reclaiming control of the world. This is the only logical progression of the story, because it is progression, and, let's not forget, the theme of the first film was control. This film wants me to believe that after all of said mistakes, they just went and did the same thing again. Do you want to reaffirm my lack of faith in humanity? Because that's how reaffirm my lack of faith in humanity.

Musicals that dont make you want to kill yourself?

Không có nhận xét nào :

90% of the time it's like "Stop. Fucking. Singing! And just... tell a goddam story!", but there have been some good ones. My Fair Lady is hilarious, and all you have to do is hit "next chapter" to skip some of the more dragging numbers.

The Music Man with Robert Preston is another comedic goldmine, and most of the musical numbers feel fitting.

Not a movie, but the Buffy episode "Once More, With Feeling" was quite stonerifically entertaining.

RENT made a passable film adaptation.

Of course The Sound Of Music deserves honorable mention, and may or may not have been as good without the incessant crooning.

Then, of course, the ultimate musical film: Hedwig and The Angry Inch.

I'm looking for a particular comment/discussion regarding the film, A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Không có nhận xét nào :

The comment itself (it was in the subreddit) was about how the film was really about Teddy and his unconditional yet tragic love for David.

It points out how David never, not once reciprocates Teddy's love. It was really sad but a great read.

Noticed something weird during an "It Follows" screening

Không có nhận xét nào :

Hey, so I noticed an odd sound error during a theater screening of "It Follows" yesterday that I'd never heard of before. I'd already seen the film once before, which is why I was able to pick out a very unusual occurrence.

There's a scene, maybe a third of the way through, where the main character and a guy are talking on a couch, late at night, when they're startled by a window breaking somewhere else in the house. I know this because I saw the movie once before. The only problem is, last night THERE WAS NO WINDOW-BREAK SOUND. It made no sense, because the characters jolt upright and say "What was that?" They're reacting to a sound that never happened. Several other people there had also seen the film before and we equally confused.

I should stress that none of the other sounds were off, nor did the film simply go mute for a second. Absolutely nothing was amiss, except for the glass-breaking sound being completely absent.

Anybody have any clue how that could happen? Is it possible that the theater has a very minutely different digital transfer than others that didn't get that one bit of ADR recorded? I asked some of the theater people about it afterward and they were surprised and said they'd check it out.

I just thought it was absolutely strange. The whole room didn't know how to react because they saw the characters freaking out about a sound that didn't actually happen.

Anybody else who saw "It Follows," do you remember this scene and was the sound messed up for you? It's immediately before she sees It in her house for the first time.

TL;DR; I saw a movie twice, and the second time one random sound effect was completely missing, and I'm not sure how.

EDIT: This was at two different theaters, by the way. Would be very strange indeed if it was the same place.

Has there ever been a great prequel?

Không có nhận xét nào :

There are lots of great sequels - Terminator 2, Aliens, the Toy Stories, Empire Strikes Back, Godfather II, etc, etc.

But a good prequel? No matter what you think of the Star Wars prequels, we can agree they don't hold a candle to the originals. The Hobbit is far inferior to the LOTR, and I think it's fair to categorize those films as prequels. The Wolverine prequel was more or less panned, the 2011 Thing prequel was terrible, Prometheus is pretty controversial, Dumb and Dumberer is just plain stupid, even Monsters University was universally "meh," and anything with the word "Origins" in it is bound to be shit.

I have a theory about this, which is essentially just agreeing with Patton Oswalt: nobody cares where the stuff they like came from! Who CARES what happened to these characters when they were kids, or young folk, or what happened 30 years beforehand? Nobody! In fact, explaining everything ruins the mystery, as I would argue the idiotic ending of Prometheus did to the Xenomorph. Oh, so it was made like five minutes before Alien started? Great, it's no longer a mysterious race from the deep of space. Boring! Oh, that's how Yoda became a meditative guru on a swampy planet, just deciding suddenly out of the blue? Stupid! Oh, that's how those people died in the Thing? Lame! Prequels are just an excuse to have recognizable characters in a familiar setting, without the hassle of coming up with brand-new stories. It's like an extended introduction that nobody asked for, and was cut for good reason.

I'll admit, Godfather II is a notable exception, with plenty of DeNiro-young-Corleone badassery, but it's still also a sequel, so it's a grey area. X-Men First Class is also decent, although thankfully it doesn't end where the first one started, a true sign of a completely pointless prequel.

Have there ever been any other truly great prequels? Or can we just agree that a prequel is all-around a stupid idea?

How GOOD would a LAST ACTION HERO reboot be under the helm of Edgar Wright as writer/director?

Không có nhận xét nào :

As I've noticed many people have mentioned in r/movies - I think LAST ACTION HERO is supremely underrated. And it's a shame that it has gotten such a bad wrap, because it's the sole reason I put off watching that movie my entire life....watched it tonight on a whim with my girlfriend and we both LOVEEED it.

Then I got to thinking, a modern reboot, written and directed by Edgar Wright would be AMAZING, spoofing modern films and new cinema tropes. Wright's self referential humour, as well as his knowledge and love for Genre movies! TELL ME YOU DONT THINK IT WOULD BE A HIT!!!

I'm a DC movie fan (the original Superman and Tim Burton's Batman are still favorites of mine), and I'm willing to listen to whatever worries people might have about the DC Cinematic Universe. I have hope that it will be good movies, because a lot of talented people are involved with the project (thought I have my doubts about Zack Snyder and David Goyer).

Why is Aguirre The Wrath of God a revered movie?

Không có nhận xét nào :

I just watched this the other night and I've been led to believe that it's some great film and honestly it seemed rather amateurish to me. Most of the shots in the movie look like they're shot with an old camcorder, the actors look at the camera probably 5-6 times throughout the film, there are really ridiculous clashes with reality, firing a cannon from a shoddy raft and at one point a dude is caught in a snare trap and apparently dies somehow, which I had to rewind and check to make sure I was seeing what happened right and sure enough, he gets slung up a tree by his foot and is dead and bleeding and the scene towards the end with the camera panning around the raft, you can see the camera boat's wake in the shot and I couldn't stop laughing my ass off.

Other than those specific things, it just felt very boring to me even for a fairly short movie I was almost nodding off mid way through.

So I'm wondering why it's so highly praised and what other people think about it. I read the wiki page for it and watched a couple crappy youtube reviews and didn't get a whole lot of great information.

For example, one might reasonably say the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" was better (and more impactful) than the "Rocky Horror Show"

Do any of you avoid trailers and media of movies you really want to see?

Không có nhận xét nào :

I started avoiding movie trailers of films i really want to see starting around Iron Man 3 and Pacific Rim. I feel like it makes seeing the movie a better experience. I also did this for Gravity and Interstellar and was in constant shock and awe watching it all in one screening.

Do any of you do this also?

Need help to find a specific movie

Không có nhận xét nào :

Hey, r/movies. I've been lurking for quiet some time now, I love this subreddit. I have come across one problem, though. There's a movie, I saw on the television few years back, but I never got its name:

It's about a young boy, who lives with his mother and her boyfriend, whom he dislikes. The boy gets sent to 2 old men (I think one of them is his grandad). These 2 live together in the country, and one of them tells this story about how he became so rich when he was in Serbia or a country like that. Turns out these men had a lion in a cage near their house. I remember one of the old men found his treasure that he had hidden all these years, at the end of the movie. And when the boy, some years older, comes back to their house, they've died of crashing the plane into the house.

I'd love to this movie again, and I really hope you guys can help me! :)

Không có nhận xét nào :

Watching it the first time, I enjoyed parts (the opening scene is gold), but for the most part I was just mad at how Carl and Russell came out of nowhere and completely ruined Charles Muntz's life's work. With complete disregard, they float in and find what he's been searching for most of his life by complete accident. It feels silly, but I couldn't help feeling sorry for Charles. Sure, he's a hunter of exotic animals, and he may not be the nicest guy on the planet, but come on. Why is it alright for Carl and Russell to ruin everything just because they think they're doing the right thing?

Star Wars Force Awakens Theory

Không có nhận xét nào :

Not much of a theory, more of a guess. But based on the new trailer, I think that Han and Chewie are stealing back the Millennium Falcon. It looks like they are in one of the hallways and the fact he says "We're home.", only feels right if he's talking about the ship they piloted together so many years. So I guess it gets taken from them at some point and they track it down and steal it back. Might be the opening to the movie on the desert planet with the downed star destroyer (tattooine?) and they get chased by that tie fighter. Any thoughts?

Just saw 'The End of the Tour' - a quick review

Không có nhận xét nào :

I was fortunate enough to catch the David Foster Wallace biopic at the Roger Ebert Film Festival last night. It included a Q&A after with Jason Segel and the Director James Ponsoldt.

Let me just start out by saying that everything about this movie seems genuine. So much so that initially, my feeling was that Segel was underplaying Wallace - but actually that's not the case at all. The stupid, hollywoodized, over played mannerisms that we all expect from Biopics about eccentrics just weren't there, and it plainly makes for a much better film. Bottom line - Segel plays a surprisingly convincing DFW.

Over the course of the 5 days spent with Wallace on his Book tour in 1996, RollingStone reporter David Lipsky (played by Jesse Eisenberg) constantly used his recorder to capture the conversations he had with Wallace - while the article he interviewed Wallace for never reached completion at RS, the conversations between Wallace and Lipsky in TEOTT are almost exclusively based on these recordings.

One of my biggest fears was that DFW would be overplayed, or written for poorly - but because of superb acting and particular circumstances concerning how these conversations were written/recorded, it is absolutely the case that my fears were misplaced.

After about a minute of this expectation subsiding, it becomes extremely easy to forget that Wallace is being played by an actor. Huge portions of real life conversations are beautifully and often identically retold, which results in something that feels real - because the conversations themselves actually happened.

If someone were to try and make a movie about the entire story of DFW, it would almost certainly be a disaster. Sure, there could be phenomenal directing, and good acting, but the task of writing original, phony lines for DFW would be one that few writers would touch, and that none would succeed at.

Director James Ponsoldt nailed it! The lighting and camerawork in TEOTT are gritty and truthful. There's nothing fantastic about the house of DFW, or the landscape of the frozen tundra of Bloomington, Illinois. At every chance given to make the movie more palatable, Ponsoldt opts out - which again results in a more rewarding experience for realists and fans of the author.

DFW didn't write books for the masses, but rather concerns himself with ideas that were more difficult and time consuming, and inaccessible, but perhaps more worthwhile if understood. While this film might be well received by large audiences, I'm happy to report that it's almost certainly a film for DFW readers, and people who are willing to think hard about the content of very good conversations.

'The End of the Tour' is extraordinarily smart and makes no concessions when portraying the life of a genius.

Snake Eyes (1998): Brian De Palma's super under appreciated film.

Không có nhận xét nào :

Snake Eyes on IMDB

Haven't seen this film in probably 10 years and decided to rewatch it on Netflix. Nick Cage is born for the role of skeezy Atlantic City cop. Gary Sinise perfectly creates an uneasiness in the viewer (his last scene in the film is absolutely haunting). A mostly great supporting cast.

What really makes this film extraordinary; however, is Brian De Palma's directing. The excitement and chaos of an Atlantic City Boxing Event in the first 15 minutes is expertly portrayed with his camera. Plenty of fluid tracking shots. Actors walking into shots from their own perspective (perhaps a bit of homage to 8 1/2?). Medium shots pushing into close ups to highlight details that we may want to remember later, but without feeling oppressive towards the viewer. The replaying of events from different perspective that doesn't feel redundant, but makes you want to see more. Tasteful use of camera angles that don't make themselves known, but build that subconscious tension. Elaborate sets to allow shots that don't exist in real life.

I'm really surprised it's only a 5.9/10 on IMDB. My guess is people were wanting a straight forward action/suspense film and didn't appreciate some of the plot developments. I will admit the tone for the second half of the film isn't quite a strong as the first half, but by the end of the film you wish you could experience more stories as stylistically portrayed as this one. This is a good watch from a classic New Hollywood director.

What does everyone else think?

Movie scenes, where part of the story is told by graphics.

Không có nhận xét nào :

Hello everybody,

I am trying to build a compilation of movie scenes where a point of the story is telled by graphics, displays, type, or any other visual representation.

Usually, scenes like this involve computer displays showing ridiculously over the top graphics and animations and their only purpose is to help the audience understand what is going on or emphasize the importance of a scene. A pretty standard one is “File downloading … 80% … 90% … DOWNLOAD COMPLETE”. Or usually computer graphics are used to show the location or proximity of an object or a target.

I am not looking for these standard graphic tools. I am looking for scenes where the graphics/visual translation IS the scene. Aliens for example makes very good use of the standard “dots on a map to show the location of the enemy” graphic and builds tension with that. The graphic suddenly becomes a key element in story telling.

I have included two examples:

1) Highlander – Signature Scanning Scene

2) The Abyss – Text Messages

The Highlander scene shows without words or particular explanation the true identity of the main character. The text messages in The Abyss tell the story of the main character’s physical decline when he nearly dies because of the pressure of the deep sea by using bad spelling and becoming incomprehensible (not in the scene shown, but in earlier scenes). They also add a lot of emotion and intimacy because they are the only way the main character can express himself right now.

I hope my point became a little clearer :) Does anybody know more scenes where a visual representation of some kind tells a part of the story?

I would love to hear any of your suggestions!

Thank you!

With all this Batman v Superman hype, can we please discuss if we think Snyder can actually pull this off?

Không có nhận xét nào :

It seems to me that he has highly stylised visuals but no substance, care for plot or attention to dialogue. I thought he would bring this gritty, real world quality to MOS. The visuals were totally that, but the story was just severely lacking, IMHO. It felt like a video game at times with all the quick zooms and what not.

Sucker Punch was one of the only films I've ever hated so much that I turned off during the first act. Can he do this, guys?? I'm going into this with low expectations so that hopefully they can be exceeded regardless. Although the DC films have their own quirks, I really appreciated Nolan's Dark Knight universe if only it wasn't war porn the entire third act like nearly every. single. Marvel movie.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I've wanted to be Batman since I was 4 years old.

I had the day off from work today and I watched this classic with my son. It amazed me how much into it I still got. Plus, for being almost 30 years old, the live action/animation scenes are still some of the best I have seen. It still holds up that's for sure. Thoughts?

Ok, I know I'm late to be saying this... but I want to know if I'm the ONLY person that did not find Babadook scary, at all (Spoilers, probably)

Không có nhận xét nào :

So I just watched this last night. I am a very fearful person so horror movies frighten me easily. So when my boyfriend kept saying that this movie was supposed to be "terrifying", I was nervous to watch it. But as it goes on, yeah I felt nervous tention... but I was not scared by it. I didn't find Babadook creepy. The movie seemed funny, and goofy to me. I laughed at the stop motion Babadook crawling around on the ceiling, it looked goofy. I laughed when he kept appearing in the TV shows.

And one thing that absolutely irritated me and TOTALLY KILLED IT FOR ME, was the use of AWFUL stock sounds. Those dinosaur sounds that are used for every low budget dinosaur cartoon or movie. That KILLLED it for me. How am I supposed to be scared of something when the sound it makes is a sound I have heard tons of times in animal shows.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie a lot, found it interesting... but was not scared. My boyfriend fell asleep several times during it as well. So.. just curious if anyone else felt that way, because it seems everyone thinks it's the "most terrifying movie ever"

What's special about 65mm/70mm film?

Không có nhận xét nào :

I read a lot of movie trivia on IMDB, and I sometimes come across movies that were shot on 65mm or 70mm film. This was apparently the norm for Hollywood movies in the 50s and 60s, but is almost never used anymore. Kenneth Branagh's 1996 version of Hamlet was the last Hollywood movie to use it until 2012, when Paul Thomas Anderson used it when making The Master.

My question is, what difference does this make? Is there something subtle in the visuals that only a trained filmmaker would be able to spot, or is it supposed to be noticeable by the average moviegoer? In the trivia page for Hamlet, it says that Branagh chose to use 65mm film because "certain shots could only be achieved in 65mm". What type of shots would those be?

Maybe I'm alone, but something just bothered me about Furious 7 and it really impacted how I felt about the whole film (Spoilers).

Không có nhận xét nào :

Paul Walker died in real life and did so before filming was done on this film. Now, I understand that you're not going to rewrite an entire script because of what happens to an actor during filming but the ending to Furious 7 made no sense to me. The voice over during the send-off is not Vin Diesel talking about Paul Walker. It's Dominic Toretto talking about Brian O'Conner. Dom's voice-over about Brian was almost exclusively in past tense (just like it would be if you were talking about a friend who had died) and yet, Brian is STILL ALIVE in the movie. They should have killed him off because to me, what's the point of the speech if Walker's character is just alive on the beach at the end of the movie?

This is a film franchise that is on fire right now. Even with Walker's death everyone involved has to know that Fast/Furious 8 is coming just because of how much cash it brings in. With than in mind, I believe Brian O'Conner is the most vital part of of the Fast & Furious franchise (he's been in more of the movies than any of the other characters). Killing his character off would be a ballsy, albeit stupid, thing for the filmmakers to do. But in my opinion, it is so much worse to just have the ending we got and then in Fast/Furious 8 just have the main character of the series missing!

Here's what I'm trying to say. They should have killed off Brian O'Conner in Furious 7. If they would have done that, the "we'll always be brothers" ending would have meant so much more. The next installment (which is absolutely inevitable) will suffer because they did not give O'Conner a proper goodbye. Everyone here is saying how emotional the sendoff was and I'm over here thinking "they are literally giving a eulogy to a character that is alive and well."

As a huge fan of the franchise, I think they really screwed up the ending and it really made me lower my personal rating for the film (I give it a 6/10 because the plot was so all over the place and the villains were overshadowed by a overdone love story but that's a discussion for another time).

Idea for the cameo of Spiderman in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Không có nhận xét nào :

Post-credits scene:

Woman walking down the street in Manhattan on a dark, rainy night. Man comes running up from behind her and snatches her purse. She screams for help while the man runs away.

Purse snatcher turns the corner and all of a sudden gets pushed up against a wall by an unseen force, you hear a thud and an "ugh!" Switch to shot of thief's face, scared and looking upward, zooming out until you can see JUST below his collarbone where it's clear something is holding him up and immobilized against the wall.

Slow 180 degree turn toward where the thief is looking, showing the side of a building with a silhouette of a figure on it. Lightning flash, Spiderman costume for a SPLIT second.

Black screen.

Eh, at least I think it would be cool to see it happen that way.
