Why is Aguirre The Wrath of God a revered movie?

I just watched this the other night and I've been led to believe that it's some great film and honestly it seemed rather amateurish to me. Most of the shots in the movie look like they're shot with an old camcorder, the actors look at the camera probably 5-6 times throughout the film, there are really ridiculous clashes with reality, firing a cannon from a shoddy raft and at one point a dude is caught in a snare trap and apparently dies somehow, which I had to rewind and check to make sure I was seeing what happened right and sure enough, he gets slung up a tree by his foot and is dead and bleeding and the scene towards the end with the camera panning around the raft, you can see the camera boat's wake in the shot and I couldn't stop laughing my ass off.

Other than those specific things, it just felt very boring to me even for a fairly short movie I was almost nodding off mid way through.

So I'm wondering why it's so highly praised and what other people think about it. I read the wiki page for it and watched a couple crappy youtube reviews and didn't get a whole lot of great information.
