Went to a prescreening of 'Unfriended'. Here are my thoughts.
I've been hearing a lot of negativity towards 'Unfriended' and I get it. The marketing campaign has been an annoying push to attract the 'Paranormal Activity' crowd and generally makes the film look like shit. And I'll be honest, I was very apprehensive when I went to go see this movie believing it was going to suck. After having seen it, however, I found it very enjoyable and actually pulled off it's concept quite well.
Now the story isn't anything special and the characters nothing we haven't seen in any other teen slasher, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the film. The main draw, of course, is it's concept, wherein the entire film takes place on a computer screen. My main fear about this movie is that I would become bored or annoyed with just seeing the screen. Let me put those fears aside, as they executed this very well.
The overall pacing of the film was excellent and the tension between characters was both interesting and believable. The film itself wasn't incredibly scary, but it plays up tension well. The film was more about the kids' relationships with each other. There are a few memorable scenes (particularly the 5 finger game).
Universal is taking a risk with this film due to it's uniqueness and I feel they should be commended for that. If you are at all interested in the concept of this film, I would recommend watching it as it is executed very well, and the film is enjoyable in its own right.
[edit] My only serious qualm with the film is that it should have ended 5 seconds sooner than it had. It had the perfect ending and they ruined it it the last second.
