Why do you feel that movies aren't as good as they used to be, or, conversely, that contemporary movies in fact hold their own in comparison?

I just finished watching The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), and it was so well done. The casting was superb, the story well adapted, and the character development was everything I could hope it to be.

Movies of recent don't really have that effect anymore.
