Why are cameos considered news and why do studios reveal them?

With the exception of leaks, why are cameos considered news? I remember reading somewhere that Kevin Smith would have a cameo in his own biopic and that got me thinking, wouldn't this ruin it for some people? I understand that they are not as a big of a deal but if I knew about iconic cameos beforehand, I would not have enjoyed them as much.
