As a student at a prestigious jazz university I did not like Whiplash, and neither did most of my peers
The movie is so out of touch with the reality of what studying music is like. The scene where the main character is sitting in with the A band and the drummer tells him "Tune my drums to Bb and turn my pages for me" No one would ever ask you to do that, you would be laughed out of the room by the students AND teachers. Also, the tunes they are playing are not indicative of the music you would hear an A band perform at a good jazz school. And no one in the world practices as dramatically as the main character. I can see how someone who has no experience with music school could like the movie, but for a music student, it misses so many details that I just couldn't suspend my disbelief.
